If you’ve been out for a burger and chips recently you’ve probably noticed that not only have the burgers become more elaborate, but the chips have too. Once upon a time the style and shape of the chip was very important to the consumer but now what has got the city talking is what comes on top…

Melburnians are no longer satisfied with the simple combination of chips and tomato sauce. A humble bowl of chips does not suffice as we now demand extravagant toppings loaded on top of our chips too.

Chilli cheese fries, poutine and Trucker Chips are just some of the varieties you can now request to be added to your chips at various venues. If this all sounds very appealing to you, you’re probably now thinking where you can find these concoctions.

Le Bon Ton

Impos venue, Le Bon Ton, has a New Orleans feel in the heart of Collingwood. It is well known for its BBQ smoked offerings and its super selection of craft beers, and now also for its chips. The crispy fries are covered in traditional Texas beef and pinto bean chilli with a sharp cheddar cheese sauce. There is also a vegetarian option available, and thankfully the Texas Chilli Fries are featured on their dinner, bar and late night menu – so that you can try them nearly any time you like.

Big Huey’s Diner

 Located in South Melbourne is Big Huey’s Diner with its (close to) unbeatable burgers and now some of the best-loaded chips in Melbourne too. Whether you’re after the traditional beer battered or the sweet potato variety, the chips are choice. They have a selection of both homemade and store-bought toppings, but for those feeling more adventurous, give the Aussie Poutine a try, topped with melted cheese and mustard gravy. 

Trunk

Situated in the Melbourne CBD, Trunk is truly the most versatile venue in the city. You can choose from modern Mediterranean in the Trunk Restaurant and Bar, or go for a burger and fries at the Trunk Diner. The Trunk Diner menu boasts many delicious options, however we recommend you try the Wagyu Chilli Cheese Fries.
